Cuba will advance its clocks by an hour March 20, state utility Unión Eléctrica announced, via an article in Communist Party daily Granma.

The measure, intended to better use daylight during summer, is a response to fast-rising oil prices and adds to an intense electricity savings campaign begun two years ago.

Cuba generates 98 percent of its electricity with oil-based fuel.
