A Panama-flagged cargo vessel chartered by Cuba sank Saturday off the coast of Belize, claiming the lives of the Cuban captain, chief engineer and helmsman.

The Belize Coast Guard rescued eight Cuban sailors who have since returned to Cuba.

The 200-foot M/V Helga was en route from Mexico to Puerto Córtez in Honduras with a cargo of salt bags, when it ran aground, capsized and sank due to strong currents.
