(EFE).- El pintoresco pueblo de Viñales, en el oeste de Cuba, se va a postular para obtener el título de Geoparque Mundial que otorga la Unesco, con lo que se convertiría en el primer lugar de la Isla en lograr esa distinción. Un equipo de expertos trabaja en estos momentos en reunir la documentación necesaria para argumentar la propuesta ante la Organización de Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (Unesco), informan este jueves medios oficiales cubanos.

Además de sus famosos mogotes -elevaciones montañosas de cimas redondeadas- y sus plantaciones de tabaco, Viñales posee numerosas cuevas donde es posible encontrar rastros de comunidades aborígenes como obras de arte rupestre y yacimientos paleontológicos, algunos de ellos en buen estado de conservación.

"Tal reconocimiento realzaría la diversidad geomorfológica de la zona, donde asoman curiosas formaciones montañosas consideradas entre las más antiguas de Cuba", declaró a la agencia estatal Prensa Latina el director del Parque Nacional de Viñales, Mario Alberto Sánchez.[[QUOTE:Viñales posee numerosas cuevas donde es posible encontrar rastros de comunidades aborígenes como obras de arte rupestre y yacimientos paleontológicos]]Entre las cuevas de Viñales, el especialista destacó la gran caverna de Santo Tomás, cuyas galerías están distribuidas en siete niveles y es una de las más visitadas por turistas.

La zona también atesora evidencias del impacto del meteorito que, según algunas teorías científicas, pudo causar la extinción de los dinosaurios, y alberga fósiles de ammonites, un molusco ya extinguido conocido popularmente como "queso" por su parecido.

En Viñales también se hallaron restos de peces y reptiles que habitaron la tierra en el período jurásico, subrayó el director del Parque Nacional.

En 1999, el valle de Viñales y el poblado que lo circunda fueron declarados Paisaje Cultural de la Humanidad por la Unesco debido a la armonía hombre-naturaleza y la preservación de antiguas tradiciones tanto agrarias y artísticas.[[QUOTE:Viñales es uno de los principales destinos ecoturísticos de Cuba y también atrae a los entusiastas de la cultura del habano]]Ese pueblo y sus alrededores son el principal atractivo turístico de la provincia occidental de Pinar del Río, que recibió el pasado año el récord de 790.000 turistas extranjeros y en lo que va de año ya ha acogido a más de 300.000.

Viñales es uno de los principales destinos ecoturísticos de Cuba y también atrae a los entusiastas de la cultura del habano porque alberga las principales plantaciones de tabaco de la Isla.

La red mundial de Geoparques coordinada por la Unesco abarca 127 escenarios en 35 países, pero Viñales sería el primero ubicado en Cuba y el quinto en Latinoamérica.

También son Geoparque Mundial el pueblo de Araripe, en Brasil; las Grutas del Palacio, en Uruguay, y la Comarca Minera de Hidalgo y la zona de Mixteca Alta en Oaxaca, ambas en México.
