Un alto funcionario canadiense dijo este lunes que Canadá retirará a los familiares de los diplomáticos de ese país que fueron afectados por los presuntos ataques acústicos en La Habana. Los análisis médicos han generado “preocupación” en el Gobierno canadiense porque aún se desconoce las causas de los síntomas de salud de sus ciudadanos afectados en la capital cubana.

Según reportó Reuters, Canadá continúa estudiando las causas de los daños que presentan funcionarios suyos en La Habana, síntomas compartidos por 24 colegas que trabajaban en la Embajada de Estados Unidos en la capital cubana.

En septiembre de 2017 Estados Unidos decidió evacuar al personal no imprescindible de su embajada en La Habana después de que varios funcionarios reportaron síntomas que iban desde mareos hasta dolores de cabeza y náuseas. Sin embargo, Canadá decidió mantener a su personal en Cuba.

Según información del Gobierno canadiense, al menos 10 de sus funcionarios en la Isla presentaron estos síntomas. Desde el otoño del pasado año no se han reportado nuevos incidentes acústicos, pero Canadá asegura que algunos de los afectados continuaron manifestando los síntomas aún después de abandonar el territorio cubano.

Las pruebas de calidad del aire y del agua en la residencia de los funcionarios canadienses en La Habana no revelaron mayor información, indicó el mismo funcionario.

El senador Marco Rubio, dijo a través de Twitter que fue notificado de que las autoridades de Canadá equilibrarían la seguridad de su personal en Cuba con la necesidad de brindar servicios en la Isla. 

Debido a la falta de conclusiones sobre las causas del estado de salud de los familiares de los diplomáticos, la embajada de Canadá en Cuba será considerada como un puesto no acompañado, por lo que los funcionarios que vayan a La Habana no serán acompañados por familiares, indicó el Gobierno de Ottawa.

En marzo, el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos, dijo que la embajada norteamericana en La Habana continuaría abierta pero con el personal mínimo. Estados Unidos ha pedido a Cuba que esclarezca las causas de las dolencias de su personal, pero La Habana ha negado que esté detrás de los llamados “ataques acústicos” y ha dicho que son un pretexto para descarrilar la normalización de relaciones entre ambos países, comenzada bajo el Gobierno de Barack Obama en 2014.
